Vacation to Mexico!

To celebrate our five-year wedding anniversary this year, we spent the last week vacationing in Mexico! We haven’t done much for our anniversary the last couple of years because of…well, a baby. So this year we decided that our gift to each other would be a beach vacation! We spent 5 nights at an all-inclusive resort in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico..and it was…HEAVEN! If it weren’t for my baby and my Keurig, I probably would have never come home! I know I’ve already shared some pictures on my Facebook page, but I thought I would tell you a little bit more about our trip and share a few more pictures….don’t worry I won’t share all of them…because there are quite a few! 🙂

We flew out pretty early Saturday morning and landed in Cancun, Mexico at about 3:30ish. This was the first time I had been on an airplane, and while I survived…I do not plan on making flying a frequent mode of travel. Motion sickness, claustrophobia, leg cramps…fear of crashing and dying!! Not good. Anyway, since it was still fairly early, I was expecting to land, go through customs real quick, grab our bag, and head to the resort. Well that plan was thwarted when we came down the stairs at the airport and saw this…..oh goody.

customs

Yup, that’s customs…and allllllllll those people are waiting in line too. We stood in line for probably 45 minutes before we were able to grab our bag and head for our taxi. Once we finally made it to the resort, we were both tired, hungry, and I had nearly lost my voice..and felt like death. *I woke up that morning with what I thought was just a slight headache and a frog in my throat from anxiety about the trip; nope…sinus cold. Greeaaatttt. As much I wanted to be perky and happy and skip down to a romantically special dinner with my husband for my birthday (because it was my birthday too), instead we spent most of our first evening in Mexico in our room. We ordered room service..and Advil, which was lovely because, while the room service was included in our stay, the Advil was $17! Oh yes, neither of us brought any medicine with us because I can’t remember the last time I was sick and needed medicine….until I’m in Mexico and it has to cost me $17! Gees!

Here’s the view from our room…not the ocean..but still very tropical and relaxing.

You’re probably thinking it sounds like our vacation was off to a great start…I was thinking that too…and hoping and praying that nothing else would go wrong!

The next morning, thankfully the Advil helped, and I felt much better. However, I still didn’t have much of a voice ( I croaked or whispered basically the entire trip), but I was determined to enjoy the trip and we spent most of that day and the next day soaking up some sun by the pool and the ocean! It was beautiful and so relaxing! Our resort had a gorgeous pool with plenty of mats to float on and chairs to sun yourself in! There were also plenty of ocean front cabanas to lay under to keep the rays off you if you needed to! ….Which by day 3 we needed to because..yup, you guessed it, we were burnt…to a crisp! Yes, we went to Mexico and mistakes were made…like not putting on enough sunscreen. Rookie mistake probably, but nonetheless, that stupid sunburn haunted us the rest of the trip!

Tuesday we scheduled a tour of some Mayan ruins nearby and to go snorkeling with sea turtles! The site of the Mayan ruins was in Tulum, Mexico, and as you can see, it was stunning! The ruins and the entire area was so beautiful, definitely worth it! What you can’t see in the picture however, is that it’s freaking hot and we were sweating our brains out..which is super fun all on its own, but you add in that stupid sunburn and let me tell ya, now that is a great time! Not. We were so ready to get in the water with those sea turtles it’s not even funny! I wish we had been able to take some pictures of that, however, the place where we were snorkeling was a bit of a walk from the van where we left our stuff..and obviously I couldn’t take my phone in the water. So you’ll just have to take my word for it that it was so cool to see the sea turtles munching on the sea grass on the bottom of the ocean! We also saw a sting ray and a bunch of fish! Neither of us have been snorkeling before, and it was probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever done! I would love to do it again!

From the top of the area where the ruins were, there was a beautiful view of the beach, and a very long staircase down to the bottom.

…And then there’s this….it was windy; I put my hair up after this picture.

Wednesday was our last full day in Mexico, and we spend half of it relaxing by ocean (under a cabana..with our clothes on..stupid sunburn), and the other half we spent walking around the 5th Avenue shopping district in Playa del Carmen. Although it was really hot that day too, we had a great time looking at all the different shops and picking out some fun souvenirs! I’m not sure if you can tell, but the shop in this picture was covered in magnets! Crazy! Our resort actually provided a daily shuttle to/from the shopping area in Playa del Carmen, which was super handy…no trying to find it on our own and getting lost instead!

For our last dinner on the resort, I thought it was only fitting dress up really nice and have Mexican! 🙂 All of the food we had during our stay was delicious, but this dinner was one of my favorites! I’m a big shrimp fan!

After dinner we took one last stroll on the beach, and then headed back to our room to pack up! Our flight was leaving the next morning at 7 am….which meant our ride to the airport was coming at 3:30 am….which meant I was up at 2:45 am…..which meant no pictures on the way home because I was a tired, frumpy, grump who was not in the mood for photos. 🙂

Despite the sunburns and no voice, we had a wonderful time in Mexico, and we are already making plans to go back! I didn’t care for the flying one bit, but I will suck it up if it means I get to go to the beach! 🙂 I hope you enjoyed all the pictures, I know it’s probably not as good as being there in person..but it’s the best I could do!
